Submission Guidelines for Manuscripts

  • Provide an abstract of 150-200 words and a list of 5 key words pertaining to your Manuscript.
  • Manuscripts should be sent by e-mail as an attachment to pinkertonk@uhd.edu.
  • Manuscripts should be double-spaced throughout (including quotations, endnotes, and works cited), with standard margins. Word 2003 or later is preferred. Authors using Macintosh software should save their work as Word for Windows. Please save copies of anything you send us. We cannot return any materials to authors.
  • In general, manuscripts for research articles should be no more than ten to fifteen double-spaced, typed pages in length (approximately 2,500 to 3,750 words). Manuscripts for classroom innovation articles can be eight to twelve pages in length (2,000 to 3,000 words).
  • Tables and figures should be in separate file(s), but with their content included in the word count.
  • Provide a statement guaranteeing that the manuscript has not been published or submitted elsewhere.
  • Ensure that the manuscript conforms to the NCTE Guidelines for Gender-Fair use of Language at http://wwwdev.ncte.org/positions/statements/genderfairuseoflang
  • Number all pages.
  • Use in-text documentation, following the current edition of the sixth edition of the APA Handbook. Where applicable, a list of works cited and any other bibliographic information should also follow APA style.
  • List your name, address, school affiliation, telephone number, and e-mail address on the title page only, not on the manuscript. Receipt of manuscripts will be acknowledged by e-mail.
  • Student consent forms for research based articles will be requested upon acceptance of the article for publication.

is refereed, and virtually all manuscripts are read by two or more outside reviewers. We will reach a decision on each article submitted for a themed issue within two months after the submission deadline, and articles of General Interest within five months after the submission deadline. In order to be considered, submissions must be received on or before the call deadline.

Informational Texts of the 21st Century, Call for Submissions: Because the majority of the sources on the Internet are expository, it appears that the 21st Century student has the opportunity to be engaged in the reading and writing of informational and nonfiction texts much more often than students of the past (Kamil & Lane, 1998). However, exposure to these types of texts and ability to understand them and write them may very well be at different ends of the spectrum. Does ease of access to these text resources equal ease of understanding about them? What do our students know about reading and writing informational and nonfiction texts? Think about ways that you have increased classroom instruction on the reading and writing of 21st Century informational and nonfiction texts. How do you define informational and nonfiction texts? Are they the same? What instructional methods and activities have been most effective in teaching your students to successfully navigate and evaluate these texts? How can teachers effectively link the academics of the classroom with the texts of the Internet? What are both digital and nondigital informational and nonfiction text resources that you have used in your classroom?
